Seat belts can be the victim’s
worst enemy.
You often see them with the patient’s first
visit. A huge black/blue hematoma ranging across patient’s chest.
This is evidence of a “seat belt injury”. Quickly get your camera
and take several pictures to capture the proof of a major trauma.
Dr. Gary Lewkovich our favorite PI Dialectician, offers research
that show the negative effects of seat belt use. Of course, the
belts are life savers, but at what cost?
The types of injuries often seen from the seat belt which prevent
the patient from catapulting are :

Spinal Injuries: torquing action, avulsion
tears of neural tissues; |

Costochondritis: inflammation of the anterior
ribs, adjacent to the sternal region; |
|
Abdominal injuries: liver, spleen kidney
bruising; |
|
Breast injuries: contusion, implant rupture /
dislocation; |
|
Pregnancy complications; |
|
Postural aberrations: chronic pain syndrome.
