February 2005

With time moving so fast most of us ponder on how to hold everything together. Last year the Workers' Comp issues definitely brought out the importance of UNITED we STAND, divided we fall. The past shows that huddling together makes it difficult for big fishes to attempt to gobble up the small fry. We do loss some battles, but should keep our sight to looking ahead to win the war. Speaking of big fishes and battles, many of us are happy that CCA continues to pursue claims against ASHP (a big fish hurting many) even though some of the issues were ruled out by a judge. For more details contact CCA or their website at www.calchiro.org.

With CCA President Buckley stressing "synergy" in director's meetings this has helped OCCD work towards showing current and future members the benefits of "huddling" together through CCA-OCCD membership. The help from CCA Membership Chairman Horn is also valuable. With this there is renewed enthusiasm at our monthly OCCD board meetings with new/old ideas discussed. One such idea was to re-look at offering continuing education (CE) classes, but at a bargain rate to members. Several speakers were lined up and training with the CCA's CE staff was accomplished. Unfortunately during this training it was discovered that no dollar discount could be offered to CE classes also offered by CCA. So we had to move our emphasis to classes that did not conflict with CCA. One possibility is Cardiac Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) training classes. Others that will be offered will or may be along the lines of legal and philosophy issues as well as current political changes that affect our practice. Flyers will be sent to all doctors in Orange County via email as well as snail mail.

Another thing that our new OCCD President Gregory initiated at our monthly board meetings was to form a financial committee to scrutinize our finances using the Quicken financial program. The committee discovered that OCCD was operating in the red, especially since for the past couple years all revenue from Speaker Meetings was directed toward the CCA Political Action Committee (PAC). Expenditures that could be controlled or curtained were reviewed. This resulted in a recommendation to eliminate the yellow page ads since most people have access to view our award winning website for information on OCCD and CCA. This was approved by our board. Another controllable sizable expenditure was the website cost. Inquiries to other districts about their website costs revealed that few have websites, let alone the caliber of ours. However, our website costs are still a concern and will be more closely monitored by the finance committee.

Speaking of costs, President, Dr. Gregory assigned our Ist VP - Meetings Chairman, Dr. Thomas Thomas, to ensure that sponsors are obtained to cover the cost of our quarterly Speaker Meetings. With the help of Past President Heller there appears no insurmountable problem in accomplishing this. At a meeting sponsors will have a time period, depending upon the level of sponsorship, to tell attendees of their products or services. Flyer mailing costs will also be borne by a sponsor who will then have their name in front of all chiropractic doctors in Orange County.

Respectfully submitted,
