From: organicconsumers.org Hello Bea, The sister organization of the OCA, Organic Consumers Fund, is taking our successful marketplace advocacy strategies to where our laws are made, Washington DC and our State Capitols. In 2000 US Senator Barbara Boxer (Democrat, CA) took leadership on the consumers right to know by authoring S. 2080, the Genetically Engineered Food Right-to-Know Act, which would require labeling of all genetically engineered foods. Please reach out to Senator Boxer's office and tell her you again look forward to her authoring in the US Senate Rep. Dennis Kucinich (D-OH) bill to require labeling of food that contain genetically engineered ingredients, the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act of 2002 (H.R. 4814). Please ask her to keep you abreast of when the bill is introduced and it's progress. Senator Boxer's contact info is: Sacramento San Francisco Los Angeles Fresno San Diego Inland Empire Currently in the US House of Representatives there is movement to more adequately protect consumers and growers from genetically engineered crops and foods. It would be a good idea to Ask Senator Boxer to author these as well. Congressman Dennis J. Kucinich (D-OH) is the chief author of all these bills that are listed below. * the Genetically Engineered Food Right to Know Act of 2002 (H.R. 4814) - requires food companies to label all foods containing ingredients from genetically engineered plants or animals * the Genetically Engineered Food Safety Act of 2002 (H.R. 4813) - improve the FDA's oversight and testing of transgenic foods * the Genetically Engineered Crop and Animal Farmer Protection Act of 2002 (H.R. 4812) - better protects farmers and ranchers against powerful biotech companies and restore farmers' traditional right to save seed * the Genetically Engineered Organism Liability Act of 2002 (H.R. 4816) - clarify and reform liability and other legal issues associated with genetically modified crops and foods * the Real Solutions to World Hunger Act of 2002 (H.R. 4815) - expand research to help developing nations better feed themselves Tom Taylor |
